Sean Harriman is a secondary character in my upcoming novel, The Deep Space Between. This particular scene occurs prior to my MC, Seraphina, leaving the town of Merricott at the age of 13. To know more about who he is and how he fits into the story, you’ll have to read my book!

The Perfect Potion (He Was Busy)
Sean maneuvered the beaker into its holder. Once secure, he let burst a small stream of aether fire to heat it. He could use a Bunsen burner – the humans invented a few convenient tools for this sort of work – but he liked using his ability in small ways. It kept him sharp and allowed him to manage larger bursts much easier.
It was one of the main points he preached about when talking to the magic wielders circle. He insisted daily practice of small magic efforts led to stronger and more controlled magic management. He lived by routine and daily practice as his mantra.
The potion in the beaker morphed from a dark red to a light icy blue as each ingredient activated in the heat. He needed a pinch more of spikemoss and it would turn the most startling shade of turquoise blue. His eye color changing potions already sold more than any other feature enhancing potion. This addition of turquoise blue would be a bestseller.
Reaching over, he dipped his spoon into the jar and gently tapped in the final amount. Eyes never wavering, he watched as the color of the beaker turned the perfect turquoise.
He linked his fingers behind his head and stretched his chest. He employed magic wielders more well-versed in potions, but they never strayed outside the box. The success of Harriman’s Herbs hinged on his potions, because he pushed the boundaries. It backfired occasionally, but that was part of practicing magic.
A light knock interrupted his triumph. Frowning, he barked out, “This better be important.”
The door cracked open, his wife Trinity stuck her head around the edge of the door. “Hey there. It is. Dinner is almost ready.”
“Dinner? It’s time for dinner already?” He linked his fingers behind his head and stretched his chest.
She laughed softly. “Yes dear. You’ve been in here for 9 hours. I’m not sure how you survive without food or drink to keep you company.”
“I have plenty of water available. Now that we’ve added a bathroom down here, everything I could need is right at my fingertips.”
“Alright, darling. I’ll leave you to finish, but I’m tapping again in 15 minutes if you haven’t surfaced by then.”
“I’m almost done. I need to write up the balance of ingredients and then my latest recipe can be shared with the team to get started on mass producing and marketing it.”
“Is this the potion to change your eye color to turquoise?”
Sean grunted, already hovering over his notes, meticulously documenting every step.
“Right. I’ll leave you to it then. Remember, dinner in 15.”
Trinity watched him fondly from the door. He focused intently on everything he did, including dating her, but only one thing at a time. It shocked her at first, until she understood he did this for everything and it wasn’t personal. Once they were joined, she grew used to his attention drops and now enjoyed it when he was and wasn’t focused on her. She could paint or read without his intensity interrupting her.
But tonight, he would be completely focused on her. Her hand on her stomach, she smiled as she headed up the stairs.
