Writing Journey: Journal Entry 9

March 4, 2021

Day 150, Week 21

  • Words: 87,081 (9,045 revised out)
  • Revised Chapters: 9
  • Ego Size: Dried Apricot
  • Emotional State: Overwhelmed

I missed doing the entry yesterday, not because I didn’t sit down to write. I did. At 5 am my brain decided it was a great time to come online, so I stumbled downstairs, made some tea and sat at my computer. Where I promptly spent one hour researching tax software, because…reasons.

I did eventually spend 2 hours writing and I chewed through writing a brand new chapter to my newly revised Act 1, revised the revisions I’d already revised a few times, and then pottered off to exercise, shower, work, work, work, a little more work, and some social media time to promote my book.

To put it plainly, I am overwhelmed. I am that kid at the beach who sees the wave, watches it approach and just doesn’t move when it slams into them, lifts them off their feet and sends them tumbling ass over teakettle in its wake.

The last day to turn in my finished, yet very very rough and ugly novel is tomorrow. I’ve mostly got the newly revised plot to the point in the book where it no longer seems disjointed, which is good. I still have 28 chapters to revise to add in all the details, remove the details, add complexity and shape into some actual semblance of a novel.

And I’ll do it. I need to plot out more social media posts, since I’ve only covered two weeks. I need to write more blog posts to schedule out. I need to interact more on social media as the book pre-sale campaign will launch soon and it will fall like a dud if I don’t.

But I also need to clean my house. Seriously, the dust bunnies are this close to turning into actual bunnies, the bathroom is (my level of) disgusting and the laundry needs doing. I also need to do the taxes, make a few phone calls and sort out some admin, fix my sewing machine, move from our old gaming room to the one we just finished redoing, play some video games, spend time with my husband, cross-stitch and oh, sew some things with my newly fixed sewing machine. All while meeting and interacting with my new group of writers for work.

So I’m swamped. And like the prince in Princess Bride, I could use some rest. But there is little time for that.

In other news, I filmed my pre-sale campaign video. It wasn’t great. The setup was janky (I never received the tripod I was supposed to use), my husband made me laugh way too much to the point I had to leave it for 20 minutes, and I didn’t really sound like me on it. Oh, and the Zoom video camera is SOOO much nicer to your face. The filters are gorgeous. The iphone camera – not so much.

And I couldn’t move my hands at all. I’m a hand talker – a big hand talker, to the point that in law school, I stuck my hands inside the podium during moot (mock) competitions so that they could move but no one else could see it. I felt hamstrung by not being able to use my hands – they’re part of how I communicate and well, it shows in the end product. I’m sure the video gurus will put something together and make it look as good as can be, but I have to say, I’m not banking on that.

In other news, I was on a podcast! It was so much fun. We spoke about writing, editing, books, video games, life, travel, college, decisions, etc. So, if you get a chance, check it out:

But now, back to the grind. I’ll be back on track next week. I promise (I don’t have a choice, *sigh*).
